SONY PXW-FX9

Professional Full-Frame Cinema Camera

The Sony PXW-FX9 is a professional XDCAM camcorder designed for broadcast production, documentaries, interviews, corporate video, independent filmmaking and high-end event coverage. It combines a full-frame image sensor with professional recording formats, extensive connectivity and an ergonomic body designed for demanding production environments. Its modular configuration allows camera operators to adapt the system to different shooting styles, from handheld documentary work to tripod-mounted interviews and more elaborate cinema-style rigs.

6K Full-Frame Exmor R Sensor

The camera features a 35.7 × 18.8 mm back-illuminated full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor with approximately 20.5 megapixels in total and around 19.7 megapixels effective for video. The sensor's 6K-class readout provides the image data used to produce detailed 4K recordings through oversampling. The full-frame format also offers greater control over depth of field and a wider field of view with suitable lenses compared with Super 35 mm capture at equivalent focal lengths.

4K Recording and High Frame Rates

The PXW-FX9 records 4K UHD video at resolutions up to 3840 × 2160 and supports Full HD recording for workflows that prioritise smaller files or higher frame rates. Depending on the selected recording format and system configuration, the camera supports 4K recording at up to 60 frames per second and Full HD recording at up to 120 frames per second. This flexibility accommodates standard-speed footage, slow-motion sequences and different delivery requirements across broadcast, online and commercial productions.

Wide Dynamic Range and Colour Reproduction

Sony's S-Log3 and S-Gamut3.Cine colour profiles provide a broad tonal range and a flexible starting point for colour grading. The camera supports recording options designed to preserve highlight and shadow detail, including 10-bit 4:2:2 recording in supported formats. These capabilities are useful when footage must be matched across multiple cameras, adjusted for different lighting conditions or graded to achieve a specific visual style during post-production.

Fast Hybrid Autofocus

The camera incorporates a Fast Hybrid AF system that combines phase-detection and contrast-detection autofocus. Its wide autofocus coverage and subject-tracking capabilities help maintain focus on moving subjects during interviews, documentary work and event recording. Operators can adjust autofocus response and subject-shift sensitivity to suit the scene, balancing smooth focus transitions with the need to follow faster movement.

Professional Audio and Connectivity

The PXW-FX9 includes two XLR audio inputs for professional microphones and external audio sources, with controls designed for production use. It also provides professional video and timecode connectivity, including 12G-SDI output, HDMI output and timecode input/output functions, depending on the installed configuration. Dual media slots support compatible recording media and allow recording workflows to be organised around the requirements of the production.

Modular Body and Production Flexibility

The camera's body is designed to support professional accessories, including compatible viewfinders, handles, shoulder supports, matte boxes, external monitors and wireless transmission equipment. An electronic variable ND filter allows exposure to be adjusted without changing the aperture or shutter settings, helping maintain a consistent depth of field as lighting conditions change. Before selecting accessories or planning a recording workflow, operators should verify the required firmware, media, lens mount and optional expansion units for their particular setup.
