Overview
Full-Frame Ultra-Wide Perspective
The VILTROX AF 14mm F4 Air is a compact full-frame ultra-wide-angle autofocus prime designed for Sony E, Nikon Z and Leica L mirrorless cameras. Its 14mm focal length provides a 112.6° angle of view, making it suitable for expansive landscapes, architecture, interiors, cityscapes, group scenes and vlogging where a large amount of the environment needs to remain visible. The wide perspective also works well for creative compositions that emphasize foreground elements and spatial depth.
Compact Air-Series Design
The lens follows VILTROX’s lightweight Air-series concept, combining a very compact body with a full-frame image circle and autofocus functionality. The Sony E version measures approximately 65 × 56.4 mm and weighs about 170 g, while the Nikon Z version measures approximately 68 × 58.4 mm and weighs about 185 g. The L-mount version is approximately 65.1 × 54.4 mm and weighs around 172 g. This makes the lens practical for travel and everyday carrying without adding substantial weight to a full-frame camera.
Advanced Optical Construction
The optical system consists of 12 elements arranged in nine groups, including four ED elements, two high-refractive-index elements and two aspherical elements. This combination is designed to control chromatic aberrations and geometric distortion while maintaining detailed rendering across the very wide image area. The lens also uses a multilayer optical coating to help reduce flare and ghosting when shooting toward bright light sources, while its distortion control is intended to preserve natural-looking lines in architectural and interior scenes.
F4 Aperture and Seven-Blade Diaphragm
The maximum F4 aperture keeps the lens compact while providing sufficient light transmission for landscapes, architecture, interiors and general wide-angle work. The aperture range extends from F4 to F16, with a seven-blade diaphragm controlling the opening. At close focusing distances, the combination of a 14mm perspective and F4 aperture can still create noticeable depth separation, particularly when a foreground subject is positioned close to the lens.
Close Focusing and Creative Perspective
The minimum focusing distance is just 0.13 m, with a maximum magnification of 0.23x. This is one of the key practical features of the lens, allowing the photographer to approach a subject very closely while keeping a large amount of the background visible. Such a combination can be used for dramatic foreground compositions, architectural details, objects, plants, food, travel scenes and creative environmental photography where the relationship between a nearby subject and its surroundings is important.
Autofocus and Video Performance
Autofocus is provided by an STM stepping motor combined with a lead-screw drive and internal focusing. AF and MF modes are available, while compatible cameras can use eye and face detection for subject tracking. The focusing system is designed for fast and quiet operation, making the lens suitable for both still photography and video. Minimal focus breathing helps keep framing more consistent during focus transitions and is also useful for focus stacking in still photography.
Durable Construction and Practical Features
The AF 14mm F4 Air features a durable metal mount and a sealed body intended to provide additional protection during outdoor use. The front optical element has a coating designed to resist water and dirt, while a standard 58mm filter thread allows the use of compatible ND, CPL and other filters. A USB-C port is provided for firmware updates, and compatible camera systems can use electronic lens communication and in-camera corrections. The combination of 112.6° coverage, 0.13 m close focus, autofocus and a weight of under 200 g makes the lens particularly practical for travel, architecture, interiors and lightweight video setups.
