Professional Full-Frame Portrait Lens

The SIGMA 85mm F1.2 DG | Art is a large-aperture medium-telephoto prime lens designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras. Its 85mm focal length provides a natural perspective that is particularly well suited to portrait photography, fashion, weddings, studio work, and cinematic image-making. The combination of the medium-telephoto perspective and exceptionally bright F1.2 aperture provides strong subject separation while retaining a controlled and natural rendering of facial features and proportions.

High Resolution at F1.2

The optical design is built to deliver high resolving power even at the maximum F1.2 aperture. The construction consists of 17 elements in 12 groups, including two SLD elements and three aspherical elements. The SLD glass helps suppress axial chromatic aberration, while the aspherical elements correct spherical aberration and sagittal coma flare. This allows the lens to retain fine textures, facial details, and edge definition while shooting wide open, making the large aperture practical not only for its light-gathering capability but also for its characteristic rendering.

Rich F1.2 Bokeh

At 85mm and F1.2, the lens produces a very shallow depth of field that can isolate the subject against a strongly defocused background. The 13-blade rounded diaphragm helps maintain a smooth, near-circular aperture shape when the lens is stopped down, contributing to attractive background rendering. SIGMA has also designed the optical system to suppress color bleeding and double-line bokeh, helping produce a smoother transition from the focused subject to the out-of-focus areas and emphasizing the three-dimensional appearance of portraits.

Fast Dual HLA Autofocus

The autofocus system uses dual HLA, or High-response Linear Actuator, technology to drive the focusing groups quickly and quietly. This system is designed to provide accurate subject tracking even with the extremely shallow depth of field available at F1.2. The combination of high-speed linear actuation and the floating focusing mechanism makes the lens suitable for both still photography and video, including portrait sessions where the subject may move naturally within the frame.

Controlled Optical Performance

The optical design also addresses common issues associated with large-aperture telephoto lenses. Advanced simulation was used to optimize resistance to flare and ghosting, helping maintain contrast and clarity when working with challenging light sources. Focus breathing is significantly suppressed through the arrangement and optimization of the focusing groups and aspherical elements, reducing changes in angle of view during focus transitions. This makes the lens particularly useful for video and cinematic applications where smooth focus pulls are important.

Professional Handling and Protection

The lens includes an aperture ring with a lock switch and a click switch that allows the aperture operation to be adjusted for different shooting requirements
