The Samyang AF 50mm F1.4 FE II is a standard prime lens designed for Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras with full-frame sensors. Its 50mm focal length provides a natural perspective suitable for portraits, everyday photography, street scenes, food photography and a wide range of creative applications. The fixed focal length encourages deliberate composition while maintaining a practical field of view for both indoor and outdoor shooting.

Bright F1.4 Aperture for Low-Light Photography

The maximum F1.4 aperture allows a substantial amount of light to reach the sensor, making the lens suitable for photographing in dim interiors, during evening sessions and in other situations where available light is limited. The wide aperture also enables a shallow depth of field, helping separate the main subject from its surroundings. The aperture can be adjusted down to F16 to increase the depth of field and control the overall appearance of the image.

Optical Design for Detail and Contrast

The optical construction consists of 11 elements arranged in 8 groups, including two ultra-precision aspherical elements, three high-refractive elements and one extra-low-dispersion element. This combination is designed to deliver detailed images with good contrast across the frame while helping control optical aberrations. Samyang’s UMC coating further supports image clarity by reducing unwanted reflections and flare in challenging lighting conditions.

Smooth Background Blur and Natural Bokeh

The large F1.4 aperture makes it possible to create pronounced background separation and soft out-of-focus areas. Its nine-blade diaphragm contributes to the rendering of defocused highlights, making the lens useful for portraits, detail photography and scenes where visual emphasis on the subject is important. The optical design incorporates precisely manufactured aspherical elements to support a refined bokeh appearance.

Fast and Quiet Autofocus for Photo and Video

The lens uses a linear STM autofocus motor designed to provide fast, accurate and quiet focusing. This makes it suitable for photographing people, everyday events and moving subjects, as well as recording video where distracting focusing noise should be minimized. The optical design also helps control focus breathing, reducing changes in the angle of view as focus shifts between near and distant subjects.

Close Focusing and Practical Controls

With a minimum focusing distance of 0.4 m and a maximum magnification ratio of 0.16×, the lens can capture close-up compositions of food, objects, flowers and other details without requiring a dedicated macro lens. A focus-hold button and a custom switch provide additional control, with available functions depending on the camera and lens settings. An AF/MF switch allows convenient selection between autofocus and manual focusing.

Compact Construction and Weather Protection

Despite its bright aperture, the lens measures approximately 88.9 mm in length and 80.1 mm in maximum diameter, with a weight of around 420 g. Its Sony FE mount supports use on compatible full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, while the 72 mm filter thread accommodates commonly available filters. Weather-sealing measures help protect against dust, light rain and snow, making the lens practical for a variety of shooting environments. On Sony APS-C cameras, its angle of view is approximately equivalent to that of a 75 mm lens on full-frame.
