Versatile Full-Frame Zoom Range

The TAMRON 20-40mm F2.8 Di III VXD is a compact standard zoom lens designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras. Covering focal lengths from 20mm ultra-wide to 40mm standard, it combines two commonly useful perspectives in a single lens. The 20mm setting is suitable for landscapes, architecture, interiors, travel and vlogging, while 40mm provides a more natural perspective for everyday photography, portraits, food and street scenes.

Constant F2.8 Aperture

The lens maintains a constant maximum aperture of F2.8 throughout the entire 20-40mm range. This provides consistent exposure when zooming and allows the photographer to work effectively in changing light conditions. The wide aperture also offers control over depth of field and can produce soft, rounded background blur, particularly when photographing subjects at close distances.

Compact Optical Construction

The optical system consists of 12 elements arranged in 11 groups, including four low-dispersion LD elements, two glass-molded aspherical elements and one hybrid aspherical element. These specialized elements help correct chromatic aberrations and other optical imperfections while maintaining high image quality throughout the zoom range. The combination of advanced optics and a compact barrel makes the lens suitable for photographers who want a fast full-frame zoom without the size of a conventional professional standard zoom.

Lightweight Everyday Design

At approximately 86.5 mm in length and 365 g in weight for the Sony E version, the 20-40mm F2.8 is designed for portability without sacrificing the constant F2.8 aperture. Its relatively small size makes it convenient for travel and everyday photography, while also providing good balance on compact mirrorless bodies. The lens is equally practical when used with accessories such as a camera grip or gimbal stabilizer, making it suitable for mobile video setups.

Fast VXD Autofocus

Autofocus is driven by TAMRON's VXD, or Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive, linear motor focusing mechanism. It provides high-speed and high-precision focusing with quiet operation, allowing the lens to track moving subjects effectively while remaining suitable for situations where reduced focusing noise is important. The system supports camera-specific functions such as Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF, making the lens useful for both still photography and video recording.

Wide-Angle Close-Up Capability

The lens can focus as close as 0.17 m at 20mm and 0.29 m at 40mm. At the 20mm wide-angle setting, the maximum magnification ratio reaches 1:3.8, allowing close subjects to be recorded with a large amount of surrounding environment still visible. This wide macro perspective is useful for food, products, flowers, small objects and creative foreground compositions where the relationship between the subject and its surroundings is important.

Video Features and Practical Construction

The 20-40mm F2.8 is particularly well suited to video and vlogging, with a short 65° zoom-ring rotation angle that allows quick focal-length changes. The lens supports TAMRON Lens Utility software for function customization and firmware updates, and the latest Sony E firmware can be updated through the same system. A 67mm filter thread accommodates a wide range of filters, while the moisture-resistant construction and fluorine coating on the front element provide additional protection during outdoor use. The lens uses a nine-blade circular diaphragm, focuses down to F22, and is supplied with a flower-shaped hood and lens caps.
