Overview

APS-C Telephoto Zoom Range

The SIGMA 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS | Contemporary is a telephoto zoom lens designed specifically for APS-C mirrorless cameras. Its 50-120mm focal length range corresponds to approximately 75-180mm in 35mm-equivalent terms, providing a useful combination of moderate telephoto and longer reach in a single compact lens. The range is well suited to portraits, events, outdoor photography, family sessions, sports, and situations where subject isolation and controlled perspective are important.

Constant F2.8 Aperture

A constant maximum aperture of F2.8 is maintained throughout the entire zoom range, allowing exposure settings to remain consistent when changing focal length. The wide aperture also provides strong subject separation and attractive background blur, particularly toward 120mm. Combined with the telephoto compression effect, the lens can isolate people and objects from their surroundings while maintaining a relatively compact APS-C system.

Advanced Optical Construction

The optical design consists of 18 elements arranged in 13 groups and incorporates one FLD element, three SLD elements, and four aspherical elements. These specialized elements are used to control chromatic aberrations, distortion, and other optical imperfections while maintaining high contrast and detail across the image. The optical construction is designed to provide consistent image quality from the center toward the edges while keeping the physical dimensions of the lens exceptionally compact.

Compact and Lightweight Construction

Despite its constant F2.8 aperture and telephoto range, the lens is approximately 99 mm long in the Sony E-mount version and weighs only about 390 g. The Fujifilm X version has a similar 99.3 mm length and 390 g weight, while the Canon RF version is approximately 97 mm long and weighs 410 g. This makes the lens substantially easier to carry than many conventional full-frame 70-200mm F2.8 designs while retaining a similar telephoto field of view for APS-C cameras.

Optical Stabilization and Fast Autofocus

The integrated OS2 optical stabilization system provides up to 6.5 stops of stabilization at 50mm and up to 4.5 stops at 120mm, according to CIPA testing. This helps reduce camera shake when shooting handheld, particularly in lower-light conditions or when working at longer focal lengths. Autofocus is driven by SIGMA's HLA High-response Linear Actuator, providing fast and responsive focusing performance for both still photography and moving subjects.

Video-Oriented Handling

The optical design is optimized to minimize focus breathing, reducing changes in the angle of view when the focus distance changes. This helps preserve framing during focus transitions and makes the lens suitable for video production as well as photography. SIGMA has also simplified the external control layout by removing separate focus-mode and optical-stabilization switches, while incorporating an aperture ring that provides direct control over exposure settings for photographers and filmmakers who prefer physical controls.

Close Focusing and Outdoor Durability

The minimum focusing distance ranges from 23 cm at 50mm to 55 cm at 120mm, with maximum magnification ratios of 1:3 and 1:4.7 respectively. An 11-blade rounded diaphragm contributes to smooth rendering of out-of-focus areas, while the 55mm filter thread provides compatibility with widely available filters. The lens features a dust- and splash-resistant structure and a water- and oil-repellent coating on the front element. It is available for Sony E, Fujifilm X, and Canon RF mounts and is supplied with a lens hood, front and rear caps, and a storage pouch.
