Natural 40mm Perspective

The VILTROX AF 40mm F2.5 is a compact full-frame autofocus prime lens designed for everyday photography, travel, street scenes, still life and environmental portraits. Its 40mm focal length provides a natural perspective that sits between a conventional 35mm wide-angle and a 50mm standard lens, allowing subjects to remain prominent while retaining a useful amount of surrounding context. This makes it a practical focal length for spontaneous everyday shooting.

Compact F2.5 Aperture

The maximum F2.5 aperture provides a useful balance between light-gathering capability, subject separation and compact lens dimensions. It allows the photographer to work comfortably in a range of lighting conditions while creating a softer background when shooting closer to the subject. The aperture range extends from F2.5 to F16, with a 7-blade diaphragm that contributes to smooth rendering of out-of-focus highlights.

Advanced Optical Construction

The optical system consists of 10 elements in 6 groups, including one ED element, three high-refractive-index elements and one aspherical element. This combination is designed to control chromatic aberration, distortion and other optical imperfections while maintaining clear and detailed images. A high-definition nano multilayer coating helps reduce flare and ghosting, supporting contrast and color reproduction in different lighting conditions.

Fast and Quiet Autofocus

Focusing is driven by an STM stepping motor combined with a lead-screw mechanism. The autofocus system provides fast and precise focusing while maintaining quiet operation, making the lens suitable for both photography and video. It supports AF and MF modes as well as eye and face detection with compatible camera bodies. Internal focusing keeps the lens length unchanged during focusing and contributes to consistent handling.

Close-Focusing Capability

The minimum focusing distance is approximately 0.34 m, with a maximum magnification of 0.14×. This allows the lens to move relatively close to the subject for details, food, still life, lifestyle scenes and environmental portraits. The combination of a 40mm perspective and close focusing provides a flexible way to emphasize foreground subjects while retaining enough of the surrounding environment.

Lightweight Air-Series Design

The AF 40mm F2.5 is part of Viltrox's lightweight Air series and is designed for convenient everyday carrying. The Sony E version measures approximately 65 × 59.5 mm and weighs about 167 g, while the Nikon Z version is approximately 68 × 55.9 mm and weighs about 180 g. The L-mount version weighs approximately 169 g and measures about 64 × 52.5 mm. A durable metal mount provides a secure connection to the camera while keeping the overall package compact.

Practical Features and Video Performance

The lens features a 52 mm filter thread and electronic communication for EXIF data transmission with compatible camera bodies. A USB-C interface is provided for firmware updates, while the front element has a water- and dirt-resistant coating. Minimal focus breathing helps reduce unwanted changes in framing during focus transitions, making the lens suitable for handheld video and everyday video production.
