Overview
Portrait-Oriented 56mm Focal Length
The VILTROX AF 56mm F1.4 is a fast APS-C autofocus prime lens designed primarily for portrait photography while remaining versatile enough for street photography, landscapes, architecture, indoor scenes and everyday shooting. Its 56mm focal length provides an approximately 85mm full-frame equivalent perspective, giving portraits a natural appearance with a comfortable working distance between the photographer and subject.
Bright F1.4 Aperture
The F1.4 maximum aperture provides strong light-gathering capability and allows photographers to achieve a shallow depth of field with pronounced subject separation. It is particularly useful for portraits where the background needs to be rendered softly, while also providing additional flexibility when shooting in low-light environments. The aperture range extends from F1.4 to F16, allowing the depth of field to be adjusted for different subjects and shooting conditions.
Optical Construction
The optical system consists of 10 elements arranged in 9 groups, including one ED low-dispersion element and one high-refractive-index element. This configuration is designed to control chromatic aberration and maintain high image resolution. The HD Nano multilayer coating further helps with light transmission and optical performance, while water- and dirt-resistant coating on the front optical surface provides additional protection during everyday use.
Autofocus and Internal Focusing
Autofocus is driven by an STM stepping motor combined with a lead-screw mechanism. The system is designed to provide fast and quiet focusing, making the lens suitable for both still photography and video recording. Internal focusing keeps the overall lens length unchanged during focusing, while AF and MF modes provide flexibility depending on the shooting situation. Compatible cameras can also use eye-detection autofocus for portrait work.
Compact Metal Construction
Despite its bright F1.4 aperture, the AF 56mm F1.4 remains relatively compact for an APS-C portrait lens. The Sony E, Fujifilm X and Canon EF-M versions measure approximately 65 × 72 mm and weigh around 290 g, while the Nikon Z version is approximately 69 × 73 mm and weighs around 320 g. The combination of metal construction, compact dimensions and moderate weight makes the lens practical for everyday carrying and extended shooting sessions.
Close-Focusing Capability
The lens focuses from approximately 0.6 m, with a maximum magnification ratio of 0.1×. This provides enough flexibility for tighter portraits, food, details and smaller subjects without requiring the use of extension accessories. The 28° viewing angle works well for isolating a subject while still retaining enough environmental context when the photographer steps back from the scene.
Aperture Control and Firmware Updates
The lens features an electronically controlled aperture with 1/3 EV adjustment steps and a total of 22 aperture positions. A 52 mm filter thread allows the use of commonly available photographic filters, while the integrated USB interface can be used for firmware updates. The lens supports EXIF data communication with compatible camera bodies and is available in mounts for Fujifilm X, Sony E, Nikon Z and Canon EF-M systems.
