Sony NW-WM1ZM3

Reference-quality portable audio

The Sony NW-WM1ZM3 Walkman Signature Series is a premium digital audio player developed for listeners who place particular importance on sound quality, musical detail and carefully engineered audio components. It combines Sony’s latest portable audio technologies with a precision-machined oxygen-free copper chassis and a large touchscreen interface. Designed for both high-resolution music libraries and compatible streaming applications, it provides a dedicated listening experience for use at home, while travelling or wherever a personal audio system is preferred.

High-resolution music playback

The NW-WM1ZM3 supports a wide range of high-resolution audio formats, allowing compatible recordings to be reproduced with fine detail, expressive dynamics and a broad frequency range. Supported formats include FLAC, WAV, Apple Lossless, AIFF and DSD, with PCM playback up to 384 kHz and DSD playback up to 11.2896 MHz. The player also supports APE, MP3, WMA, AAC and MQA, making it suitable for music collections containing both lossless masters and compressed files. This broad compatibility reduces the need to convert an existing library before transferring it to the device.

Precision-engineered oxygen-free copper chassis

A defining feature of the Signature Series model is its precision-machined oxygen-free copper body, developed as part of Sony’s approach to controlling unwanted electrical interference and optimising the audio signal path. The chassis forms part of an audio design that uses carefully selected components throughout the player. Its substantial metal construction also gives the device a distinctive premium feel. The NW-WM1ZM3 is intended for listeners who value the engineering behind the sound as much as the music itself.

Advanced amplification and headphone connections

Sony’s S-Master HX digital amplification technology is designed to provide clear, controlled playback with low distortion. Both a conventional 3.5 mm stereo headphone output and a balanced standard headphone connection are available, offering flexibility with compatible wired headphones. The balanced connection is useful for headphones equipped with a matching cable, while the dedicated amplification and signal circuitry are designed to preserve musical detail and dynamic contrast. The player can also operate as a USB DAC when connected to compatible equipment.

Sound processing and personalised listening

A selection of Sony audio-processing functions allows listeners to adapt playback to their preferences and music collection. DSEE Ultimate is designed to enhance the perceived detail of compatible compressed audio, while the 10-band equaliser provides precise tonal adjustment. Additional processing options include DC Phase Linearizer, Dynamic Normalizer, Vinyl Processor and three Look-ahead Noise Shaper settings. Direct Source mode provides a way to listen without additional sound-effect processing, helping users choose between a direct signal presentation and the available sound customisation options.

Large touchscreen, streaming and expanded storage

The 5.5-inch Full HD colour touchscreen has a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels and provides a clear interface for browsing music, managing playlists and using compatible applications. Android 16 and Wi-Fi connectivity support compatible music-streaming services and other audio applications, alongside playback of locally stored files. The player includes 256 GB of internal storage, with approximately 207 GB available for user content, and supports microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC cards for further expansion. USB Type-C supports data transfer and USB DAC operation.

Wireless connectivity, battery life and construction

Bluetooth 5.4 supports wireless audio transmission using codecs including LDAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, AAC, SBC and LC3. With the Sony W.Music application, battery life is rated at up to approximately 35 hours for MP3 playback and around 33 hours for 96 kHz/24-bit FLAC playback under specified conditions. A full charge takes approximately four hours, although actual endurance varies with settings and connection method. The copper-bodied player measures approximately 86 × 157.6 × 23.2 mm and weighs around 670 g. The package includes a USB-A to USB-C cable, documentation and protective caps for the USB-C and headphone connections; headphones and a microSD card are not included.
