SONY XLR-A4
Professional XLR audio adapter for Sony Alpha cameras
The Sony XLR-A4 is a professional digital audio adapter designed to expand the sound recording capabilities of compatible Sony Alpha cameras. It allows external microphones and professional audio sources to be connected directly to the camera through the Multi Interface Shoe, combining audio signal transmission and power delivery in a single connection. The adapter supports high-resolution audio recording, including sampling rates up to 96 kHz and 32-bit floating-point recording on compatible cameras. Its compact, reinforced construction is intended for interviews, documentary filmmaking, commercial video production and other applications where reliable sound capture is essential. With multiple audio inputs, independent channel controls and flexible mounting options, the XLR-A4 provides an integrated solution for professional camera-based audio recording.
High-resolution 96 kHz and 32-bit floating-point recording
The XLR-A4 supports audio recording at sampling rates up to 96 kHz, allowing compatible Sony cameras to capture detailed sound with an extended frequency range. When used with suitable high-resolution microphones, this capability helps preserve subtle vocal characteristics, environmental textures and other fine acoustic details. Support for 32-bit floating-point recording provides extensive flexibility during post-production, particularly when recording sources with large variations in volume. Quiet dialogue and sudden loud sounds can be handled with a wider usable dynamic range, reducing the need for extremely precise gain adjustments during recording. These advanced formats require a compatible camera; models without 96 kHz and 32-bit float support are limited to lower recording formats, up to 48 kHz/24-bit.
Dual analogue-to-digital converters for wide dynamic range
The adapter incorporates a dual analogue-to-digital converter architecture designed to preserve a broad range of audio levels. Two converters operate at different gain levels, allowing the system to capture quiet and loud signals while retaining greater flexibility for subsequent audio processing. When connected to a compatible camera supporting 96 kHz/32-bit float recording, the converters work together to produce 32-bit floating-point digital audio. This technology is particularly useful when recording unpredictable sound sources, such as interviews in changing environments, live performances and documentary scenes. Although the system provides considerable headroom for post-production adjustments, audio that is physically clipped at the microphone input stage cannot be recovered.
Versatile inputs and four-channel audio recording
The Sony XLR-A4 features two professional three-pin combination XLR/TRS inputs and an additional 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack input. Both XLR/TRS connections support microphone and line-level signals, as well as 48 V phantom power for compatible condenser microphones. The stereo mini-jack supports plug-in power for suitable microphones. When used with a compatible camera, the adapter supports up to four channels of digital audio recording, allowing several sound sources to be captured simultaneously on separate tracks. Flexible input assignment and the ability to configure safety channels with different recording levels provide additional control during production. This arrangement is suitable for interviews with multiple participants, combinations of directional and wireless microphones, and complex recording environments.
Intuitive manual controls and overload monitoring
The XLR-A4 provides dedicated physical controls for managing audio input settings directly on the adapter. Manual gain adjustment dials, input selection controls, attenuator switches and low-cut filter switches are grouped together for convenient access during recording. Individual overload indicators help users identify excessively high input levels and respond before they affect the recording. The clearly organised control layout supports efficient operation when working with multiple microphones or rapidly changing sound conditions. Independent adjustment of the audio channels allows operators to optimise recording levels for different sources without relying exclusively on camera menus. This hands-on approach is particularly valuable in professional video production, where quick and predictable sound adjustments are often necessary.
Multi Interface Shoe integration and USB audio connectivity
The adapter connects to compatible Sony cameras through the digital Multi Interface Shoe, transmitting audio and receiving operating power without requiring separate batteries or audio cables. The XLR-A4 can also be positioned away from the camera using the supplied VMC-SA1 Shoe Audio Extension Cable, providing greater flexibility when assembling camera cages and professional recording rigs. An integrated USB Type-C port allows the adapter to operate as a USB audio interface when connected directly to a computer. In this configuration, it supports two-channel audio input at sampling rates up to 96 kHz with 24-bit resolution, making it suitable for voice recording, podcasting and studio applications. Camera compatibility and the availability of advanced recording functions should be verified before use.
Durable construction and comprehensive supplied accessories
The Sony XLR-A4 features a reinforced, low-profile body designed for dependable operation in professional recording environments. Its low centre of gravity helps reduce mechanical stress on the camera's Multi Interface Shoe, while the supplied extension cable and reinforcement attachment allow more flexible and secure positioning. The adapter measures approximately 113.2 × 99.8 × 80.0 mm and weighs approximately 198 g, providing a practical balance between functionality and portability. The supplied accessories include the VMC-SA1 Shoe Audio Extension Cable, a cable reinforcement attachment, a mini-stand, a carrying case and two connector protection caps. The mini-stand supports convenient placement when the adapter is used separately from a camera, including USB audio applications. A microphone is not included and must be selected separately according to the intended recording requirements.
