The Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD is a versatile zoom lens designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. Its broad focal-length range covers wide-angle, standard, and telephoto perspectives, making it suitable for landscapes, portraits, travel photography, everyday snapshots, and distant subjects. By combining several commonly used focal lengths in one lens, it helps reduce the need to change lenses frequently and keeps a camera kit more compact.

Wide Zoom Range with a Bright f/2.8 Aperture

The 28–200mm focal-length range provides flexibility for changing compositions, from expansive scenes at the wide end to tightly framed subjects at the telephoto end. At 28mm, the lens offers a maximum aperture of f/2.8, supporting faster shutter speeds and greater control over background blur in suitable lighting conditions. The maximum aperture gradually changes as the focal length increases, reaching f/3.5 at 50mm, f/4.5 at 100mm, and f/5.6 from approximately 150mm to 200mm.

Optical Design for Detailed Images

The optical construction consists of 18 elements arranged in 14 groups, including specialised low-dispersion and aspherical elements. LD and XLD glass elements help control chromatic aberrations, while BBAR anti-reflection coating helps reduce unwanted reflections, flare, and ghosting. These technologies are designed to support clear, detailed images across the zoom range, including scenes with strong contrast or backlighting. In-camera lens correction can further help manage distortion and peripheral shading on compatible Sony cameras.

RXD Autofocus for Photography and Video

The RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) autofocus system uses a stepping motor and position-detection technology to provide fast, precise focusing. Its quiet operation is useful for both still photography and video recording, particularly when minimising focus-drive noise is important. The lens also supports compatible Sony camera functions such as Fast Hybrid AF, Eye AF, and Direct Manual Focus, although available features depend on the camera body and its firmware.

Close-Focusing Performance

The lens offers useful close-up capability for an all-in-one zoom. At 28mm, its minimum focusing distance is approximately 19 cm, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.1. At the 200mm telephoto end, the minimum focusing distance is approximately 80 cm, and the maximum magnification ratio is 1:3.8. This makes it suitable for photographing details, food, flowers, and small objects while allowing the background to appear softer when shooting with a wide aperture.

Compact Construction and Outdoor Protection

Despite its extensive zoom range, the lens measures approximately 117 mm in length and 74 mm in maximum diameter, with a weight of around 575 g. Its 67 mm filter thread is compatible with filters of the same diameter, including suitable polarising and neutral-density filters. Moisture-resistant construction and a protective fluorine coating on the front element provide additional help when shooting outdoors, though they do not make the lens fully waterproof or suitable for immersion.

Sony E-Mount Compatibility and Included Accessories

The Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD uses the Sony E-mount and is designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras. It can also be used on compatible Sony APS-C bodies, where the narrower field of view produces an angle of view equivalent to approximately 42–300mm on full-frame. The lens features a seven-blade circular diaphragm and a minimum aperture range of f/16–32, depending on the selected focal length. Standard accessories include a flower-shaped lens hood and front and rear lens caps.
