Its 28mm focal length provides a wide 74.6° viewing angle, offering more environmental context than a 35mm lens while maintaining a relatively natural perspective. Bright F1.8 Aperture

The maximum F1.8 aperture provides strong light-gathering capability for working in low-light conditions while also allowing control over depth of field. The nine-blade diaphragm is designed to produce smooth and natural background rendering, while the combination of a wide focal length and close focusing allows photographers to create compositions with a pronounced sense of depth. The lens can therefore be used not only for wide scenes but also for portraits and subjects positioned close to the camera.

Advanced Optical Construction

The optical system consists of 11 elements arranged in 9 groups, including two aspherical elements and three ED elements. These special elements are designed to control chromatic aberration, distortion, coma, and other optical imperfections while maintaining high resolution across the image area. An HD Nano multilayer coating helps reduce ghosting and flare and supports contrast and color consistency when shooting toward bright light sources. Close-Focusing Capability

The lens focuses down to 0.37 m and offers a maximum magnification of 0.1x. This allows the photographer to move relatively close to a subject while still retaining the characteristic wide-angle perspective of the 28mm focal length. Close focusing can be useful for details, food, objects, environmental portraits, and creative compositions where the foreground subject is emphasized against a broader background. Internal focusing keeps the front element from rotating during operation and maintains a practical physical design.

Fast and Quiet Autofocus

Autofocus is driven by an STM stepping motor combined with a lead-screw mechanism. The system is designed for fast, accurate, and relatively quiet focusing and supports both AF and MF operation. Eye-detection autofocus is supported on compatible Sony and Nikon camera bodies, providing additional convenience for portrait and subject photography. The focusing system is also suitable for video and vlogging applications where reduced motor noise and smooth focus movement are important.

Compact Everyday Construction

The lens combines a relatively compact body with a durable metal mount and a practical design for everyday carrying. The Sony E version measures approximately 70 × 88.2 mm and weighs about 367 g, making it suitable for use as a lightweight wide-angle prime. A 55 mm filter thread allows the use of commonly available circular filters, while the supplied petal-shaped lens hood helps reduce unwanted light entering the front element. A USB interface is provided for firmware updates and future compatibility improvements.
