Universal Camera Top Handle with Cold Shoe

The SmallRig SR 1638 is a universal top handle designed to improve camera handling and expand the mounting options available on a camera rig. It attaches to compatible camera cages using two 1/4"-20 screws and provides a comfortable grip above the camera body. The handle is suitable for video production, documentary filming, interviews and handheld shooting, particularly when the operator needs better control over camera movement and positioning.

Ergonomic Shape and Comfortable Grip

The handle features a contoured shape designed to fit comfortably in the hand. Its construction provides a dedicated grip point for carrying and manoeuvring the camera, helping reduce the strain associated with holding the camera body directly during extended recording sessions. The elevated grip position also makes it easier to lift, reposition and guide the camera when working in confined spaces or moving between different shooting angles.

Designed for Low-Angle Shooting

Positioned above the camera, the handle provides convenient control when filming from a low perspective or moving the camera close to the ground. This configuration is useful for dynamic tracking shots, product demonstrations, event coverage and other situations where a conventional grip on the camera body may be less practical. The handle also offers an alternative carrying point when moving the camera between locations.

Multiple Threaded Mounting Points

The SR 1638 features 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threaded mounting holes on its top and sides, allowing compatible accessories to be attached directly to the handle. These mounting points can accommodate monitor mounts, articulating arms and other rigging components, helping keep the camera setup compact and organised. An ARRI-style 3/8"-16 locating hole at the rear provides an additional mounting option for compatible accessories that require locating pins.

Integrated Cold Shoe Mount

The handle includes a cold shoe mount for standard compatible accessories, such as compact microphones, wireless audio receivers and LED lights. Mounting these accessories above the camera can provide convenient positioning while leaving other attachment points available for additional equipment. The cold shoe offers a straightforward way to expand the rig without requiring a separate accessory bracket.

Durable Aluminium-Alloy Construction

Made from aluminium alloy, the SR 1638 combines a rigid structure with a lightweight design suitable for portable camera systems. It measures approximately 127.2 × 70 × 48 mm and weighs around 158 g, with minor variations possible between units. The handle has a stated maximum payload capacity of 10 kg; the safe working load of the complete rig also depends on the cage, mounting screws and other connected components.

Compatibility and Package Contents

The SmallRig SR 1638 is compatible with camera cages or mounting platforms that provide two 1/4"-20 threaded holes with centres spaced approximately 27–36 mm apart. This mounting arrangement allows it to be used with a range of compatible camera rigs rather than a single camera model. The package includes one top handle, two 1/4"-20 mounting screws and one hex wrench for installation.
