Professional 4K camcorder for broadcast and production

The Sony PXW-Z280V/C is a professional handheld XDCAM camcorder designed for broadcast production, electronic news gathering, documentaries, corporate video and event coverage. It combines 4K recording capabilities, integrated professional zoom optics, advanced audio connectivity and network functions in a single camera system. Its shoulder-style handheld design and familiar control layout support efficient operation during extended recording sessions, both in studio environments and on location.

Three 1/2-inch Exmor R CMOS sensors

The camcorder features a 1/2-inch 3CMOS imaging system with three back-illuminated Exmor R sensors, each dedicated to capturing one of the red, green and blue colour channels. This configuration supports detailed image reproduction, high sensitivity and a deep depth of field suited to professional production. Sony specifies a typical sensitivity of F12 at 59.94p and F13 at 50p under the stated measurement conditions, helping the camera capture usable images in a range of lighting environments.

4K recording and professional formats

The PXW-Z280 supports QFHD recording at 3840 × 2160 and Full HD recording at 1920 × 1080. Recording options include XAVC Intra, XAVC Long, MPEG HD422, MPEG HD and DVCAM, providing flexibility for different production and post-production workflows. Supported configurations include 10-bit 4:2:2 recording in applicable XAVC modes, making the camcorder suitable for projects that require detailed colour information and additional flexibility during colour grading.

Integrated 17× optical zoom lens

The built-in lens offers a 17× optical zoom with a focal-length range of 5.6–95.2 mm, equivalent to approximately 30.3–515 mm in 35 mm format. Servo and manual zoom control allow operators to choose between smooth powered zoom movements and direct manual operation. The lens features a selectable autofocus and manual-focus system, optical image stabilisation and an aperture range of F1.9–F16, supporting a variety of framing requirements without changing lenses.

Variable ND filtration and HDR imaging

The integrated electronic variable ND filter allows exposure to be adjusted continuously across an approximate range equivalent to 1/4 ND through 1/128 ND. This makes it possible to control the amount of light entering the camera while maintaining a preferred shutter speed and aperture, particularly in changing outdoor conditions. HDR production is supported through HLG and S-Log3 workflows, giving operators options for capturing and managing a wide range of brightness and colour information in compatible post-production systems.

Professional audio, connections and network functions

The camcorder includes two 3-pin XLR audio inputs with selectable line, microphone and +48 V phantom-power settings, supporting professional microphones and external audio sources. Video connectivity includes 12G-SDI, HDMI and other professional interfaces for monitoring, recording and integration with production systems. Network features include wired LAN and wireless connectivity; the PXW-Z280V variant supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, subject to regional availability and regulations. Streaming and file-transfer capabilities can help speed up delivery from the field.

Dual media slots and practical operation

Two ExpressCard/34 slots support the camera’s primary recording media, with simultaneous and relay recording options available for supported formats. A separate SD/MS card slot supports proxy recording and utility functions. The camcorder has a 3.5-inch LCD monitor and a 0.5-inch OLED viewfinder, helping operators monitor composition and exposure in different shooting positions. The body measures approximately 178.4 × 202 × 426.3 mm and weighs around 2.6 kg without accessories. Battery life, recording duration and included accessories depend on the selected configuration and operating conditions.
